George Wilkes

George is in the final year of his undergraduate degree at the Royal Academy in London, where he has studied with Josephine Knight. Whilst at RAM he has been awarded the Frank Britton award, was a prizewinner in the May Mukle Cello Competition and a finalist of the Duo Prize competition. In his second year at RAM George was awarded the principal cello seat for both the Symphony and Chamber orchestras working with conductors Sir Mark Elder and Peter Whelan.

Recent festival performances include the Nume festival in Italy where he received tutelage from Alban Gerhardt and in March this year the Schiermonikoog Festival where he studied with Jeroen Reuling and Gary Hoffman. In May, George will perform in the Hellens Music Festival, where he will have lessons with Bruno Delepelaire (the principal cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra) and will spend the summer in the US where he will be studying with Hans Jensen. His most recent masterclass was with Stephen Isserlis. He has given solo and chamber music recitals at venues in London such as St James Piccadilly and Regents Hall and as a passionate advocate for contemporary music George has worked with members of the Riot Ensemble and Manchester Collective.

George grew up in Shipston where he attended the Birmingham Junior Conservatoire studying with Elaine Ackers. While there he was both the principal cellist of the Chamber and Symphony orchestras and performed as a soloist with the Chamber orchestra. At the age of 16 George made his concerto debut performing Elgar’s Cello Concerto with the Oriflamme Ensemble. The following year he performed Saint-Saëns Cello concerto with the Warwick Foundation Orchestra. George was in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain performing at prestigious venues including the Albert Hall.
