August walk with Elizabeth Searle

03/08/2023 @ 6:00 pm 7:30 pm

Join Elizabeth and her fellow walkers for a summer walk around the beautiful village of Ilmington.

Setting off from the Howard Arms at 6pm, the route takes you up through fields to admire the views of the village. Then along the gentle rise of Pig Lane with splendid views of the Midland Plain to the right and back down the road into the village. The route is approximately 2.5 miles and is steepish in parts, but will be taken at a leisurely pace.

Ilmington is a beautiful village full of houses of local honey-coloured iron stone. It is well known for the many footpaths that cross the village and for its historic, multi-variety apple orchards. The church of St. Mary’s is well worth a visit. Norman in origin, it was originally built around the middle of the 12th century. The pews and oak furniture were made by the Yorkshire furniture maker, Robert Thompson, known as the Mouseman. His signature was a little carved mouse, 11 of which can be found on the furniture in St. Mary’s! Also often on display is an Apple Map embroidered by villagers, which is an exact copy of old maps showing where the orchards were.

Following the walk you can choose to stop and have a drink or meal at The Howard Arms. Please contact Elizabeth by Tuesday evening if you would like to join the walk and let her know if you would like to stay for refreshments: 07876 681 846 or e_searle@btinternet.com
